You've all probably seen by now that I can't stop printmaking! It has latched onto me and it's here to stay!
I wanted to take some time to explain this transition to you.
Although Mae Handmade is a thriving business, I felt I needed a change. I realized I had become disconnected to my work. My process looked like this: paint, photograph, print copies of the painting. I was doing much less painting, and much more printing copies of everything to fill orders. It was not fulfilling my creative thirst.
That's when I remembered how much I loved printmaking in art school. I took out all my printmaking supplies, and haven't put them away since. I have re-fallen completely in love with the printmaking process and product!
Now my process looks like this: envision an idea for a print, draw the image onto paper, transfer the image to a block (usually artist linoleum or rubber block), carefully and meticulously carve the image out, roll out oil based eco friendly ink onto a piece of glass, roll the ink onto the freshly carved block, place paper onto inked block and hand burnish (rub). Then I lift the paper and voila! A completely hand printed piece of artwork!
Because everything is done by hand, each piece of art is unique and will look slightly different depending on amount of ink applied, pressure of hand burnishing, placement of block on paper, etc.
Everything about this process feels CONNECTED and THOUGHTFUL!
The amount of time and energy invested into each piece of artwork, has helped me slow down and appreciate each and every part of the process.
I have realized the power of a simple line, simple colours, simple design, and high quality materials like premium papers and oil based eco friendly inks.
But don't worry, Mae Handmade goods will still be available at www.maehandmade.etsy.com, at various shops across Manitoba and at local pop up shops!
It is my genuine and sincerest hope that you find beauty in the simple and intentional artwork in my shop.
